Planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park? Here’s a simple, yet helpful day hike checklist of items and ideas to review.  For best results: Plan ahead, pace yourself and try to spend a day in each section of the park.

Mammoth Springs Area

This vast area is a system of hot springs on a hill of travertine located adjacent to Fort Yellowstone and the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District.  The Mammoth Terraces extend from the hillside, down to the Boiling River.

Lamar Valley & Tower Junction

Lamar Valley is located in the northeast section of the park, just east of Tower Junction. Home to herds of elk, bison, and several packs of wolves, the Lamar Valley is Yellowstone's prime location to view wildlife.

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The canyon is approximately 24 miles long, between 800 feet and 1,200 feet deep and between 1/4 of a mile and 3/4 of a mile wide.  There are numerous trails and viewpoints of the canyon falls, both from the north and south rim.

Lake Hotel Area

The picturesque lake region offers diverse hiking, thermal features, the oldest hotel in the park, as well as, the largest body of water in the park - Yellowstone Lake.  The scenic beauty of the lake is a restful stopping point in your park tour.

Known for the beautiful little geyser basin along the shore of Yellowstone Lake West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the smallest geyser basins in the park yet its location along the shore of Yellowstone Lake ranks it as the most scenic.

The Old Faithful Area (Upper Geyser Basin) is one of the most popular locations in the park for good reason. The Upper Geyser Basin contains the largest concentration of geysers in the world, a hands-on visitor center and the iconic Old Faithful Inn.
